Patriots dominate in home opener

St. Catharine, Ky. – The Patriot volleyball team had their home opener tonight and they won in dominating fashion. They earned a three sets to none victory over the visiting Centre College Colonels (25-16, 25-8, and 25-14).

The Patriots used suffocating defense and powerful offense to blow the Colonels away. The Patriot defense forced the Colonels into a -.024 hitting percentage and seven service errors. The Patriots on the other hand tallied 40 kills and a .346 hitting percentage.

Cat Hall (Louisville, Ky.) led the offense with 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .444. Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) and Mikaela Beck (Detroit, Mich.) tallied nine kills apiece in the win. Jordan Strickland (Lexington, Ky.) and Maja Krstonosic (Kikinda, Serbia) guided the offense to perfection combining for 24 assists and zero errors.

The Patriots (2-3) dominated the Colonels from the get go. In the opening set, St. Catharine jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead before the Colonels were able to claw out the next four points to cut the lead to 8-4. The Patriots answered with a 7-2 run forcing the Colonels into a timeout. Centre cut the lead to six, but the Patriots won the opening set 25-16.

The second set went as though the first set went with the Patriots jumping out to a 9-0 lead to open the set. The Colonels finally got on the board at 9-1, but St. Catharine went on a 5-0 run to force Centre into a timeout. Centre never posed a threat to Patriots in the set as they won the set 25-8.

The third set got off to a sloppy start for both teams as four out of the first five points were errors. The Patriots got out to a 9-3 lead after back-to-back kills by Mikaela Beck and Jessie Stone (Fredonia, Ky.). The Patriots recovered from their errors earlier in the set as they cruised to a 25-14 win.

The volleyball team is back in action tomorrow night when they host Asbury (Ky.) at 7 p.m. EST.
