Volleyball wins in comeback fashion

St. Catharine, Ky. – The Patriot volleyball team was caught playing catch up last night against the visiting Eagles of Asbury (Ky.). After dropping the first two sets, St. Catharine kicked it into high gear winning the final three sets to complete the comeback and win the match 3-2.

The Patriots, now 3-3 on the year will hit the road this weekend for the 2015 Lindsey Wilson College Volleyball Classic. St. Catharine begins play on Friday against Point Park (Pa.) at 10:30 am EST, then they take on Grace (Ind.) later that day at 12:30 pm EST. Then on Saturday at 11 am EST the Patriots take on Asbury, they then conclude the tournament with a match against Northwestern Ohio at 1 pm EST.

In the opening set, it was the Eagles who jumped out to a 5-1 lead but after back-to-back kills by Cat Hall (Louisville, Ky.) and Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) the deficit was cut to one at 5-4. After the Patriots held a 14-11 lead, the Eagles responded with a 9-1 run to take the opening set 25-21.

The second set was a back-and-forth battle between both teams. Just like the first set, it was the Patriots who held a 14-11 lead after kills by Hall and Just. After the two battled to a tie at 20 apiece, Asbury seized control of the match taking a 2-0 lead after winning the second set 25-22.

The momentum, however, began to shift in the Patriots’ favor beginning in the third set. Unlike the first two sets, the Eagles grabbed the 7-4 lead in the early going. The lead, however, was short lived; after a pair of kills by Mikaela Beck (Detroit, Mich.) and three aces by Jodie Klein (Louisville, Ky.) the Patriots took the lead 10-7. The Eagles were able to fight off three set points to tie the match at 25-25, but the Patriots prevailed winning 27-25.

St. Catharine seized control early in the fourth set after they jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead forcing the Eagles to call a timeout. Asbury responded by cutting the lead to five at 14-9, but the Patriots answered with a 7-2 run to cruise to a 25-15 win in the set.

After winning the third and fourth sets, the Patriots were able to force a decisive fifth set. After battling to a tie at 6-6, the Patriots took the advantage with a 7-2 run to pull ahead 13-8. Asbury responded by going on a 5-1 to cut the deficit to 14-13, but a kill by Cat Hall ended it giving St. Catharine the 3-2 win.

The Patriots used a balanced attack by having four players record double-digit kills. Rebecca Just led the way with 18 kills and 15 digs. Mikaela Beck pitched in with 17 kills and a .378 hitting percentage to go along with 11 digs. Cat Hall and Jessie Stone (Fredonia, Ky.) rounded out the offense with 15 and 13 kills, respectively.

Jordan Strickland (Lexington, Ky.) was nearly perfect running the offense committing just one error on 55 assists. Strickland also added 14 digs to her stat line. Jodie Klein was also sensational on defense with 18 digs in the win.
