Missed Chances Leads to Patriot Loss

Box Score

For the second time in as many games the Patriot women had many chances to score what would have been a tying goal. But in falling to 0-2, they just missed those opportunities in suffering their second consecutive 1-0 setback.

That loss came Tuesday against visiting Asbury University who improved to 1-2 on the season. The Eagles scored the only goal nine minutes into the game. A corner kick by Toria Howard rattled around in front of the goal before Mia Wiersema corralled it and found the net past goalkeeper Emily Belt (Paducah, Ky.). Asbury had five other shots on frame, out of just seven total shots, but Belt turned them away.

St. Catharine fired 18 shots for the game. Eight of those were on goal but Brooke Perkins was able to save each shot to record the shutout. Sara Herbert (Louisville, Ky.), Kindsay Miller-Riney (Bardstown, Ky.) and Vannah Moreland (Marietta, Ga.) each had two shots on goal.

The Patriots’ best chance came in the 64th minute when Nicole Schowalter (Dayton, Ky.) lofted a shot over Perkins but the attempt struck solidly off the crossbar. The final St. Catharine opportunity came in the 79th minute when Amanda Schabell (Alexandria, Ky.) shot was just wide of the net.

The Patriots will be on the road for their next game at Point Park University in Pittsburgh.  The next home match is September 10th against Cincinnati Christian.
