Patriots Sweep UC in “Battle of the Patriots"

Williamsburg, Ky. – The Patriot volleyball team (17-7, 6-4 MSC) pushed their win streak to five last night when they traveled to Williamsburg, Ky. and picked up a 3-0 sweep over University of the Cumberlands.

In their first meeting of the season, St. Catharine took the opening two sets, but only to see Cumberlands (16-5, 5-4 MSC) battle back and win the final three sets to win the match 3-2. Once again it was SCC that won the opening two sets, but this time they closed the door in the third set to finish off the 3-0 sweep.

The Patriot offense posted 41 kills and a .231 hitting percentage, but the Patriot defense forced the Cumberlands into a .114 hitting clip. The defense finished with 53 digs in the win with three players posting double-digit digs. Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) led the way with 15 digs. Jodie Klein (Louisville, Ky.) and Jordan Strickland (Lexington, Ky.) each posted a 10-dig effort.

Mikaela Beck (Detroit, Mich.) led the offense with 12 kills on the night. Cat Hall (Louisville, Ky.) was the only other player to post double-digit kills with 11. Hall also added a .474 hitting clip. Jordan Strickland guided the Patriot offense with 30 assists.

St. Catharine got off to a hot start in the opening set jumping out to a 9-3 lead. Cumberlands quickly responded with an 8-1 run to take their first lead of the match at 11-10. UC continued to control the match as they held a 21-19 lead, but St. Catharine closed the set out with 6-2 run to win the set 25-23.

The hot start for St. Catharine continued in the second set after they sprinted out to a 5-2 lead. After the two teams traded the next eight points, SCC went on a 6-3 run to take a 15-9 advantage. Cumberlands battled back and tied the set up at 24 apiece, but made back-to-back errors to give the set to St. Catharine 26-24.

The third set went the opposite way that the first two sets went. This time it was UC who opened a 7-2 lead, but St. Catharine battled back with a 5-0 run to tie it up at seven apiece. After the set was tied at 17-17, SCC closed the set out with an 8-3 run to win the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.

The Patriots will return to action tomorrow night when they entertain Mid-South Conference rival Georgetown (Ky.) at 7 p.m. ET. In their first meeting at Georgetown, the Patriots won the opening set, but Georgetown battled back to win the next three to win the match 3-1.
