Men's Soccer shuts out Oakland City 3-0

Box Score

St. Catharine, Ky. -- After suffering a tough loss to perennial power Lindsey Wilson College earlier in the week, the St. Catharine College men’s soccer team got back on track with a shutout victory over Oakland City University on Saturday afternoon.

The Patriots (6-6) were led by Marvin Wesselburg (Essen, Germany) who posted a pair of goals and an assist in the 3-0 win. Bradley Wilson (Doncaster, England) scored the other goal for the Patriots to cap off the scoring. Wilson also added an assist to his stat line. Joe Jessop (Lincoln, England) added an assist for the Patriots as well.

St. Catharine got on the scoreboard first when Wesselburg scored his first goal of the game in the seventh minute. Wilson lofted the ball into the box and found Wesselburg who fired the ball past the keeper and into the back of the net.

Both teams would have a chance to score a goal in the remainder of the half. The Mighty Oaks (1-8-1) had a chance when they took a corner kick and found Louis Ross right in front of the goal, but Brandon Campbell (Louisville, Ky.) was right there to make the diving save.

The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the Patriots at halftime. But not long after intermission the Patriot offense got back on track. Joe Jessop launched a ball into the box that found Marvin Wesselburg who snuck past the Oakland City defense and finished for his second goal of the game.

The Patriots had other opportunities to add to their lead, but couldn’t get the timing down until the 84th minute. The ball was first played to Wesselburg who played a perfect header that hit Bradley Wilson in stride. Wilson controlled the ball and fired it into the back of the net to seal the 3-0 win.

St. Catharine was clearly the more aggressive team as they outshot the Mighty Oaks 11-8 including 6-2 in shots on goal. Brandon Campbell picked up his sixth win of the season playing all 90 minutes in goal while stopping a pair of shots from Oakland City.

The Patriots will return to the pitch on Tuesday when they take on Fisk (Tenn.) in Nashville, Tenn. Then on Friday, October 16th, they travel back to Tennessee to take on Mid-South Conference foe Cumberland University.
