Patriots split opening day of Boneyard Brawl

Georgetown, Ky. -- The Patriot volleyball team was in action on Friday afternoon when they traveled to Georgetown, Ky. to compete in the Boneyard Brawl at Georgetown College.

The Patriots would face a pair of ranked opponents in the first day of the Boneyard Brawl. In their first match, St. Catharine fell to fifth-ranked Columbia (Mo.) 3-1. But the day would get better for the Patriots after they defeated No. 23 Indiana Wesleyan University 3-2 in a five set thriller.

In their opening match the Patriots got off to a hot start after they won the opening set 25-22. The 1-0 lead was short lived, however, after Columbia won the next three sets 25-19, 25-17 and 25-16 to take home the 3-1 win.

Against Columbia, Mikaela Beck (Detroit, Mich.) led the Patriots with 11 kills in 32 swings for a .343 hitting clip. Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) and Cat Hall (Louisville, Ky.) each finished with nine and eight kills, respectively.

Jordan Strickland (Lexington, Ky.) finished with a double-double posting 33 assists and 11 digs on defense. Jodie Klein (Louisville, Ky.) and Rebecca Just also recorded double digit digs with 13 apiece.

After falling in their first match of the day, the Patriots would battle back to defeat Indiana Wesleyan. St. Catharine didn’t get off to a good start after they dropped the first two sets 25-17 and 25-9, but they would battle back and win the next three sets 25-20, 25-23 and 15-6 to win the match 3-2.

Leading the way on both offense and defense was Rebecca Just. Just posted a double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs. Cat Hall also had a solid performance on offense with 14 kills. Rounding out the Patriot hitters was Mikaela Beck who finished with 10 kills.

Just wasn’t the only Patriot to post a double-double, Jordan Strickland recorded 46 assists and 10 digs. Jodie Klein also pitched in on defense with 12 digs. Jordan Strickland and Jessie Stone (Fredonia, Ky.) also controlled the net with three block assists apiece.

St. Catharine will return to Georgetown, Ky. tomorrow when they finish out the Boneyard Brawl. Their first game is at 1 p.m. ET against seventh ranked Viterbo (Wisc.). Then at 4 p.m. they battle St. Thomas (Fla.).
