Patriots soar past the Asbury Eagles

Wilmore, Ky. – The Patriot men’s basketball team (2-3) put an end to their three game skid tonight when they went on the road and defeated Asbury (Ky.) 75-72 in the opening game of the Asbury Classic. St. Catharine will return to Wilmore, Ky. tomorrow when they take on Brescia (Ky.) at 2 p.m. ET.

Leading the way for the Patriots was Chris Johnson (Bowling Green, Ky.). Johnson finished with 22 points on 6-for-13 shooting from the floor. Brandon Bobb Jones (Wilmington, Del.) posted a double-double finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Emory Bennett (Miami, Fla.) and Bryson Harris (Louisville, Ky.) also finished in double figures for the Patriots. Bennett finished with a season-high 16 points in 18 minutes. Harris added 10 points for the Patriots.

In the early going it was the Eagles that jumped out to an 8-0 lead after a pair of 3’s and a layup. The Patriots quickly gathered themselves and responded with a 7-0 run of their own just four minutes in. Jones got the run started with a layup, then Johnson sank a pair of freebies and Harris drained a triple cutting the Asbury (3-2) lead to one.

The Eagles held a 21-19 lead until Brandon Bobb Jones took over. Jones tied it up at 21 apiece after a layup, but the Eagles came back and sank a trey taking a 24-21 lead. Jones responded by splitting a pair at the charity strip then he drained a pair of 3’s giving the Patriots their largest lead of the game at 28-24. St. Catharine continued to add to their lead as they held a 37-29 lead at intermission.

After intermission, the lead quickly grew to 11 after Emory Bennett converted a three-point play. The Eagles cut the lead three, 44-41, after they went on an 8-2 after trailing 42-33. On the next trip down the court, Bennett extended the lead back out to six after he drained a triple.

Asbury made a final run at the deficit as they tied it up four times over the final five minutes and change. Every time the Eagles tied it up the Patriots responded with a bucket. They tied it up one final time at 72 apiece, but Emory Bennett responded with a bucket while Chris Johnson added a free throw to seal the 75-72 win for the Patriots.

St. Catharine struggled down the stretch at the charity stripe where they shot 53 percent (14-26) for the game. The biggest difference came from long range where the Eagles shot 4-for-19 (21 percent). The Patriots on the other hand sank nine in 20 attempts for a 45 percent mark.
