Patriots Women Swept Away by Tornadoes

Box Score

St. Catharine, Ky. -- The Talladega College Tornadoes roared into Lourdes Hall Monday and left the St. Catharine women in their wake with a 61-55 victory. The win improved the visitor’s record to 7-1 while Megan Dzikas’ squad fell to 2-7.

While the decision will still go down as an L in the record book the outcome could have been much worse considering how the game started for the Patriots. It was more than 10 minutes into the game before St. Catharine made its first field goal which put them behind 11-4. With only three buckets in the first half, the Patriots limped into the locker room facing a 23-13 deficit, having shot just 11 percent from the field.

But things improved dramatically after intermission for the Patriots who shot 48 percent in the second half. That allowed them to take the lead on three different occasions in the final quarter. The last lead came with 5:31 remaining when Patrice Tonge (Lebanon, Ky.) sank two free throws to make the score 42-41.

The Tornadoes, however, streaked to a 9-0 run for a 50-42 advantage with 3:21 to play. When Miranda Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) sank a free throw with 41 seconds left the lead was at 55-52 but that was as close as the patriots could get.

St. Catharine shot 31 percent for the game while the Tornadoes made 37 percent of their attempts. Talladega was 15-25 from the foul line (60 percent) while the Patriots made 76 percent of their charity tosses (16-21).

Cora Moore (Louisville, Ky.) paced the Patriots with 12 points and Breanna Ball (Dayton, Ohio) added 10. Kayla Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) grabbed nine rebounds and Sasha Ruiz-Lopez (Ft. Myers, Fla.) hauled in seven to help the patriots to a 40-39 rebounding advantage.

St. Catharine will host Milligan College at home next Monday in a game time that has been moved to 4:00. The Patriots fell at Milligan 77-67 in the second game of the season.
