Patriot Women Corral the Buffaloes

Box Score

St. Catharine, Ky. -- For a short time, Monday’s game conjured up bad memories for the St. Catharine College women. Those memories were of the second game of the season when the Patriots saw a second half lead of 15 points turn into a 77-67 loss at Milligan (Tenn.).

But this time around, In Lourdes Hall, the Patriots held on for a 73-69 win after seeing a 13 point lead dwindle to just one point before pulling away down the stretch. St. Catharine (3-7) handed Milligan (9-1) its first loss of the season.

The Patriots trailed 22-15 after one period but rallied to take a 34-32 halftime lead. They increased the advantage to 13 points in the first minute of the fourth frame and then withstood the Buffaloes’ comeback to pull out the victory.

That comeback pulled Milligan within one point at 59-58 with 5:05 to play. But an 8-2 run by the Patriots gave them a 67-60 lead and the closest Milligan could get was the final four point margin.

“We outrebounded them (42-37) and that was huge,” said Patriot head coach Megan Dzikas whose team lost the rebounding battle 40-28 in the first game against Milligan.

Patrice Tonge (Lebanon, Ky.) led the Patriots’ board effort with seven and also tossed in 17 points. Tonge was one of four Patriots in double figures. Cora Moore (Louisville, Ky.) led the scoring effort with 20 points as the senior point guard was 5-7 from three point range. Sasha Ruiz-Lopez (Ft. Myers, Fla.) added 10 points and Miranda Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) had 12 points and six rebounds.

The Patriots shot 46 percent from the field and connected on 70 percent from the foul line (14-20). Milligan shot 39 percent from the field and was 10-11 (91 percent) from the charity stripe.

St. Catharine is back in action Thursday with a Mid-South conference tilt at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn.
