Lebanon, Tenn. – The St. Catharine College men’s basketball team (3-7, 1-2 MSC) put an end to their four game skid after they won their first Mid-South Conference game of the season over Cumberland (Tenn.) 76-70.

It was a balanced scoring attack to lead the Patriots with four players in double figures. Chris Johnson (Bowling Green, Ky.) finished with 23 points while Brandon Bobb Jones (Wilmington, Del.) added 13. Bryson Harris (Louisville, Ky.) and Emory Bennett (Miami, Fla.) finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The trio of Johnson, Jones, and Bennett combined for 21 rebounds to give the Patriots a 36-35 edge on the glass. Cumberland shot 47 percent (24-51) percent from the field and the Patriots shot just 39 percent (23-59). The Bulldogs struggled to match the Patriots streaky shooting from deep as St. Catharine hit 11-of-28 from long range and Cumberland hit 3-for-14.

In the early going it looked like Cumberland (5-7, 0-2 MSC) was going to run away with it after they built a 7-2 lead, but Nick Porter (Owensboro, Ky.) answered with back-to-back 3’s giving his team a one point advantage.

With 4:21 remaining in the first half, the Bulldogs had built a seven point lead, but right there for the answer was Bryson Harris for one of his four triples. Chris Johnson scored the final seven points for the Patriots including a trifecta with two seconds remaining in the half cutting the Bulldogs’ lead to two, 36-34.

Brandon Bobb Jones tied the game to open the final frame, but the Bulldogs responded with an 8-2 run taking a six point lead. The Patriots battled back with 10-2 run of their own to take a 48-46 lead.

The Bulldogs responded by taking a 55-54 lead, but Davante Wiltshire (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Bryson Harris responded with back-to-back 3’s while Chris Johnson added a free throw to give the Patriots a 61-55 lead with 7:47 remaining.

Cumberland made one final push after they cut the lead to one with 5:37 left, but once again the Patriots answered the bell going on a 10-2 run to take a nine point lead with under a minute remaining en route to a 76-70 victory.

The Patriots will return to action this Saturday when they take on Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in Columbia, Ky. with tip-off set for 5 p.m. ET.
