Patriots silence Grenadiers with Late Rally

St. Catharine, Ky. – The St. Catharine College men’s basketball team (4-10) turned a 13 point deficit into an 87-83 victory over Indiana University Southeast in front of a raucous crowd of local elementary students on Tuesday afternoon. Davante Wiltshire (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) nailed a corner trey with 3:09 remaining that would give the home team the lead for good.

Chris Johnson (Bowling Green, Ky.) paced the Patriots with 28 points and eight rebounds. Johnson caught fire from long range where he hit 6-of-11 3’s. Brandon Bobb Jones (Wilmington, Del.) posted his fourth double-double of the season with 24 points and 11 rebounds.

After both teams got off to a cold start to open the game, but it was the Grenadiers (4-8) that jumped out to a nine point advantage midway through the first half. Jones managed to tie the game up with 29 seconds left in the half, but IUS added a late layup to take a 39-37 lead into the locker room.

The second half was a back-and-fourth battle after there were four ties in the opening four minutes. The Grenadiers seized control after going on a 13-0 to take a 61-48 advantage with 11:56 to play.

St. Catharine quickly responded by outscoring the Grenadiers 22-9 over the next five minutes to tie the game up at 70 apiece. Johnson sparked the run after he connected on three straight 3’s. IUS took one final lead at 72-70, but Jones responded with a step back jumper and Wiltshire got loose for a three to give the Patriots the lead for good.

The Grenadiers cut the lead to one with 1:35 to play, but the Patriots connected on five of six free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. Nick Porter (Owensboro, Ky.) added two and Brandon Bobb Jones sank 1-of-2 with nine seconds left.

Porter finished with 10 points in the win. Tyler Smothers provided a spark off the bench for the Patriots finishing with nine points and seven boards in 16 minutes of play. Wiltshire pitched in with eight points.

St. Catharine shot 47.5 percent (28-59) from the field including 10-for-24 from three point range. The Grenadiers shot 32-of-70 from the field and 9-for-24 from long range. The Patriots had their best outing of the season at the charity stripe where they connected on 21-of-23 for 91 percent.

The Patriots conclude their first semester schedule when they take on Brescia (Ky.) on Thursday for a 7 p.m. tip.
