Patriot Grapplers pull pair of upsets at Warrior Duals

Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Patriot wrestlers were in action this past weekend when they traveled up north to Fort Wayne, Indiana to compete in the Warrior Duals at Indiana Tech University.

After defeating No. 18 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) 23-12 to open the event, the Patriots suffered their only defeat against second-ranked Indiana Tech 33-9. The Patriots, however, bounced back defeating (RV) Missouri Baptist 23-11 and winning in dominating fashion over Calumet (Ind.) 54-0.

BJ Carman (New Haven, Ky.) highlighted the 3-1 record for the Patriots after posting a perfect 4-0 record at the event. Carman’s biggest win of the day came against Andrew Mahone of Missouri Baptist who is ranked seventh at 197 pounds.

Mario Bell (Dayton, Ohio) was the only other Patriot to post a perfect record. After sitting out the match against Embry-Riddle, Bell picked up a victory by decision over Kegan Clark-Sanchez (Missouri Baptist) and pair of victories by forfeit.

The other Patriot wrestler to come up big was Andy Dobben (Barberton, Ohio). Dobben finished with a 3-1 record and picked up a pair of victories over ranked opponents. He first defeated Brenn Schiess (Embry-Riddle) who is ranked 15th at 157. He followed that up with a sudden victory in overtime against Thomas Garty (Indiana Tech) who is ranked 12th at 149. His only loss came against Matthew Behr (Missouri Baptist) who is ranked 14th in 157 pounds.

Gage Branson (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Mitch Rusch (Goshen, Ky.) each posted 3-1 records at the Warrior Duals. Branson’s only loss came against Travis Barroquillo (Indiana Tech) who was ranked No. 2 in 141. He picked up victories by decision, technical fall and pin.

Mitch Rusch suffered his only defeat of the day against LJ Grayson (Indiana Tech) who is currently ranked second in 184 pounds. He also picked up victories by major decision and decision. His other victory came by forfeit.

Anthony Ashford (Dayton, Ky.), Garrett Carter (Macedonia, Ohio), Shelby Floyd (Upton, Ky.), and Zach Sullivan (National Trail, Ohio) each had solid showing at the Warrior Duals finishing with a 2-2 records.

The Patriots will close out the calendar year this Saturday and Sunday when they travel up to Indianapolis, Indiana for the 37th Annual Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
