Women's Basketball falls to Top-Ranked Campbellsville

Campbellsville, Ky. -- The St. Catharine College women’s basketball team (6-13, 1-5 MSC) fought a tough uphill battle on Thursday night when they traveled to take on top-ranked Campbellsville (Ky.).

The Patriots hung close with the Tigers (18-3, 6-1 MSC) after they trailed by just three at halftime. Unfortunately for St. Catharine, the Tigers came out firing in the second half. They outscored the Patriots 48-26 over the final two periods en route to an 82-57 win.

It was a night the Patriot offense would like to forget. The one bright spot was Kayla Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) who led her team with 21 points. The only other Patriot close to double figures was Sasha Ruiz-Lopez (Ft. Myers, Fla.) who finished with nine points.

The Tigers suffocating defense forced the Patriots into 24 turnovers on the night. St. Catharine shot just 38 percent (20-52) for the night, while Campbellsville torched the nets shooting 51 percent (30-59). The Patriots connected on 8-for-18 from long distance and the Tigers hit 9-of-17 for the game.

St. Catharine raced out to a 16-7 lead early thanks to the sharp shooting of Kayla and Miranda Wilson (Corbin, Ky.). The twin sisters combined to score 14 of the Patriots opening 16 points.

The run for the Patriots was short lived after Campbellsville responded with an 8-0 spurt over the final 4:17 of the opening quarter cutting the Patriot lead to 16-15 heading to the second. The Tigers battled back in the second period to take a 34-31 lead into the locker room.

Campbellsville exploded in the third frame. They opened the third period on a 15-3 to build a 49-34 lead midway through the period. The lead grew to 58-41 heading to the final 10 minutes where the Tigers expanded their lead to as many as 28 en route to the 82-57 win.

The Patriot women will now have to week to prepare for their next game against Georgetown (Ky.) on Thursday, January 28th, with tipoff set for 6 p.m. in Lourdes Hall.
