Bat Pats sweep doubleheader over Crimson Wave

St. Catharine, Ky. -- After head coach Luther Bramblett picked up his 500th career victory last weekend at Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.), he guided his squad to a doubleheader sweep over Calumet (Ind.) in their home opener at Edelen-Haydon Field.

St. Catharine (5-4) won the first game 7-1, and then they completed the sweep after they won the second game 11-2 to take the first two of the four-game series. The two teams are back on the diamond Saturday afternoon beginning at 12 p.m. ET.

Game 1: St. Catharine 7, Calumet 1

Box Score

Senior right-hander, Daniel Lerma (Oxnard, Calif.) gave the Patriots a quality start on the bump. Lerma picked up the win going the full seven innings allowing one run on five hits. Lerma didn’t allow any free passes, while tallying five strikeouts.

Lerma got a big boost from his offense that plated five runs on two hits in the bottom of the second. With runners on second and third, Reid Battles (Denton, Texas) ripped a triple into right-center scoring two. Battles also scored on the play after a wild throw by the right fielder.

Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) added to the lead when he singled to score Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) from second. Quinones would later score on a passed ball making the lead 5-0 after two innings.

The Patriot offense would take advantage of some sloppy defense from the visitors in the sixth inning. In that inning the Patriots plated two runs without recording a hit. Bohorquez hit a sac fly to score Battles, while Quinones grounded out scoring Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.).

The six-run cushion was more than enough for Lerma who silenced the Crimson Wave except for the one run in the fifth. The Patriot offense recorded three hits led by Battles going 1-for-2 with two RBI’s and two runs scored.

Game 2: St. Catharine 12, Calumet 2

Box Score

In the nightcap, the Patriots took control from the beginning behind the arm of Joan Pena (New York, N.Y.). Pena had a no-hitter going into the sixth, but it was broken-up on a leadoff single. Pena moved to 2-0 going six innings allowing two runs – none earned – on two hits while striking out eight. James Davenport (Louisville, Ky.) pitched a scoreless seventh with two K’s.

The Bat Pats got going early with a three spot in the first. Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) delivered a double to deep left-center scoring Bohorquez and Quinones. The lead expanded to 3-0 after a sac fly by Evan Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.).

Smith was back at in the third when he doubled to score Lollio, who reached base on an error. The lead ballooned to 5-0 in the fifth when Josh Wenning tripled scoring Reid Battles.

The Crimson Wave (0-5) plated two runs in the sixth, but the Patriots answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning. Lollio delivered the big hit in the inning when he lifted a ball high in the air that cleared the right field fence for his second home run on the season.

Davenport closed the game out with a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh. Lollio led the way at the plate reaching base four times going 3-for-3 with three RBI’s and three runs scored. Wenning also went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s, while Evan Smith added two RBI’s.
