Bat Pats scratch out 8-7 win over Bearcats

St. Catharine, Ky. -- In what was a late addition to the schedule, the Patriot baseball team (12-6) hosted Brescia (Ky.) in a single nine-inning game today at Edelen-Haydon Field.

The Patriots took an early 3-0 lead after the first inning, but fell behind after the Bearcats (4-8) scored five in the second inning. St. Catharine battled back scoring two in the third and fifth innings as well as a run in the eighth to defeat the Bearcats 8-7.

Picking up his second win on the season was freshman right-hander Joseph Martin (Fort Thomas, Ky.). Martin struck out three allowing just two hits in five innings of work. Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) picked up his first save of the season allowing two runs in two innings on the mound.

The Bat Pats struck first with three runs on four hits in the opening inning. With runners at second and third, Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) delivered a double that scored two. Evan Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) made the lead 3-0 with an RBI single later in the inning.

Brescia took the lead back with a five run second inning, but the Patriots scored a pair in the third inning. This time it was Cody Kollenberg (Peewee Valley, Ky.) who delivered a single that scored Smith and Clay Druin (Bardstown, Ky.).

The Patriots were back at in the fifth inning when they scored two more. This time it was a key error on the Bearcats that allowed two runs to score. St. Catharine scored one more run in the eighth inning thanks to a Lollio RBI single.

Brescia made it interesting in the ninth with two runs, but Quinones nailed it down for the save. Nicco Lollio led the way at the plate with two hits and three RBI’s, while Kollenburg had two RBI’s and Evan Smith added an RBI with two runs scored.

The Patriots are back in action this weekend when they host Huntington (Ind.) for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 4 p.m. ET at Edelen-Haydon Field.
