Patriot women see season end at hands of No. 8 Bears

Frankfort, Ky. -- The St. Catharine women’s basketball team saw their season come to an end tonight at the hands of Shawnee State (Ohio) after a 75-50 loss in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament.

With the loss, the season comes to a close for Patriots and ends the first year under Megan Dzikas. In the first year under Dzikas, the Patriots compiled an 8-21 record overall and a 1-13 mark in the MSC.

Emilie Harrell (Madisonville, Tenn.) and Miranda Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) led the Patriots in scoring with nine points apiece. Patrice Tonge (Lebanon, Ky.) finished with eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Bears (26-5) jumped out to an 8-2 lead and never looked back as they never trailed en route to the 75-50 win. After falling behind early, the Patriots battled back to pull within two, 10-8, as Shawnee State took a 15-8 lead after the opening quarter.

The Bears took off in the second period as they outscored the Patriots 20-7 to take a 35-15 heading into the locker room.

The third quarter wasn’t much better for the Patriots. In the period, the Bears built their lead to as many as 28, 50-22, as they took a 56-29 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

Even though the Patriots trailed by as many as 31 in the fourth quarter, they continued to fight. After trailing 73-43, St. Catharine closed the game on a 7-2 run as they fell 75-50 to the top-seeded Bears.

Coach Dzikas will now turn her attention to the offseason as she has to replace, Cora Moore, who is the lone senior on the team.
