Box Score

After trailing 2-1 heading into the fourth inning, the St. Catharine offense busted through in a big way with a nine run fourth inning en route to the 11-6 win. The Foresters (2-7) scored four in the fifth, but it wasn’t enough as the Patriot pitchers held on for the win.

Joan Pena (New York, N.Y.) kept his perfect season alive moving to 4-0 on the year. Pena allowed six runs – four earned – on nine hits with six strikeouts in five innings of work. James Davenport (Louisville, Ky.) didn’t allow a run in 1.1 innings on the mound.

Austin Willis-Greene (Manhattan, N.Y.) picked up his first save of the season when he entered the game with one out and the bases loaded in the seventh inning. Willis-Greene dashed the hopes of any rally from Huntington after striking out the final two batters to seal the victory.

St. Catharine got on the board first after taking advantage of miscue on the Foresters. Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) reached on a walk and moved into scoring position with a stolen base. He then scored on a wild throw by the pitcher giving his team a 1-0 lead.

Huntington battled back with two runs in the third inning, but the Patriots answered to the tune of nine runs in the fourth. The big hit came off the bat of Bohorquez who cleared the bases loaded with a triple down the right field line.

The Foresters cut the lead in half after scoring four in the fifth inning, but the Patriots responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) pushed the run across with an RBI single making the final score 11-6.

Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, Ind.) led the way at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBI’s. Reid Battles (Denton, Texas), Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR), and Wenning all finished with two hits and one RBI each. Alfredo Bohorquez and Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) each collected one hit and three and two RBI’s, respectively.

Game 2: St. Catharine 3, Huntington 0

Box Score

In the nightcap, the Patriot offense cooled off with just four hits, but they managed to come away with 3-0 win thanks to the strong performance from Marvin Galarza (Arecibo, PR) on the mound.

Galarza had one of his best starts of the season after tossing a complete game shutout. The junior right-hander went the distance throwing seven innings and allowing just four hits. He remained undefeated joining Joan Pena with a 4-0 record on the season.

St. Catharine got on the board first with a run on one hit in the first inning. Back-to-back walks opened the inning, then Quinones laid down a sac bunt moving both runners into scoring position. Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) drove in one of the runners with an RBI single.

Pitching would take over until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Patriots plated two runs on three hits. Drew Kissel drove in the first run with an RBI double, while Tyler Devine drove in the other with an RBI single.

The three run cushion was more than enough for Galarza who went the distance in the shutout victory. Lollio, Kissel and Devine all recorded one hit and an RBI, while Santiago Arce (Chula Vista, Calif.) recorded the only other hit for the Patriots.

Up next: The Patriots are back in action on Tuesday when they host Indiana University Southeast. They open Mid-South Conference play next weekend when they travel to Georgetown (Ky.) for a three-game set.
