Patriot Softball drops twinbill with Georgetown

Georgetown, Ky. -- The Patriot softball team (15-15, 2-6 MSC) was back in action today when they traveled to Georgetown, Ky. to take on Mid-South Conference foe Georgetown (Ky.).

The Tigers (16-10, 7-1 MSC) won both games by a final score of 4-3 in each game. The Patriots will travel back to Georgetown tomorrow when they finish up their series with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. ET.

Game 1: St. Catharine 3, Georgetown 4

The game headed to extra innings after the game was tied at 3-3 after seven innings of play. Georgetown got a run in the eighth inning to walk away with the 4-3 win.

Tiffany Wickline (Georgetown, Ky.) took the loss for the Patriots to fall to 8-7 overall on the year. Wickline allowed four runs on eight hits in seven innings of work in the circle.

After Georgetown got on the board first with a run in the fourth inning, the Patriots answered with one of their own in the fifth. It was Lynsie Clark (Morgantown, Ky.) who turned on a 3-2 pitch and blasted it over the left field fence for a solo home run.

St. Catharine came back with two more in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead. The first run scored when Brittany McKee (Somerset, Ky.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Two batters later, Caitlyn Blair (LaGrange, Ky.) ripped an RBI single to give her team a 3-1 lead.

Georgetown tied it up in the bottom of the sixth when they hit a pair of solo home runs. Then, after neither team scored in the seventh, the Tigers got a walk-off double in the eighth to come away with the 4-3 win.

Kelsey Gravens (Mt. Washington, Ky.) led the Patriots at the plate with two hits and a run scored. McKee didn’t record a hit, but finished with an RBI, while Blair and Clark each collected a hit and an RBI.

Game 2: St. Catharine: 3, Georgetown 4

In the nightcap, Georgetown scored two in the bottom of the fifth to come away with the 4-3 victory. Jennifer Ortega (Delano, Calif.) started the game going six innings while allowing four runs on seven hits. Ortega falls to 5-6 overall on the season.

The Tigers got on the board first with a pair of runs in the third inning, but St. Catharine battled back with one in the fourth inning thanks to the power of Brittany McKee. McKee took the first pitch she saw and sent it over the center field fence for a solo shot.

The Patriots came back with two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead. This time Jennifer Ortega helped her own cause when she blasted a solo shot to open the inning. Kelsey Gravens then hit an RBI single to give her team a 3-2 lead.

The lead was short lived after Georgetown scored a pair in the sixth taking a 4-3 lead. The Tigers closed out the final two innings and didn’t allow a base runner to seal the 4-3 win.

Once again leading the way at the plate was Kelsey Gravens. Gravens went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jennifer Ortega also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Brittany McKee collected the other RBI on her solo home run.
