Bat Pats walk-off for 2-1 win over Cumberland

Box Score

St. Catharine, Ky. -- The Patriot baseball team (23-9, 4-3 MSC) pushed their win streak to four on Friday afternoon when they got a walk-off victory over Cumberland (Tenn.) at Edelen-Haydon Field.

The Patriots pushed the winning run across in the bottom of the tenth when Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) ripped a single between the third baseman and shortstop to score Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) giving the Patriots the 2-1 victory.

For the second game in a row, senior right-hander Daniel Lerma (Oxnard, Calif.) gave his team a quality outing on the mound. Lerma was given the no decision after allowing one run on four hits in nine innings of work.

Jake McCoy (Mesa, Ariz.) picked up the win coming on in relief. McCoy (1-2) entered the game in the 10th inning with a runner at second base. The junior kept the game tied after a strikeout and a ground out ended the threat setting up the dramatic finish in the bottom half.

The Patriots got on the board first with a run on two hits in the bottom of the third inning. Reid Battles (Denton, Texas) reached on a two-out walk, then two batters later, Bohorquez pushed the first run across with an RBI single to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.

The lead would remain at 1-0 until the top of the sixth when the Phoenix (17-16, 2-5 MSC) sneaked a run across tying the game at 1-1.

The game remained tied as both starting pitchers continued to go toe-to-toe. Lerma was matched by Cumberland starter Eric Barron, who also took home a no decision. Barron fanned eight allowing one run on four hits in nine innings on the mound.

The duo of Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, Ky.) and Jake McCoy tossed a scoreless 10th to set up the walk-off single in the bottom half of the inning.

Alfredo Bohorquez led off the inning by reaching second base on an errant throw by the shortstop. Then after a quick pop out and an intentional walk to set up the double play ball, Tyler Devine came through with RBI single to give the Patriots the win.

It was a quiet day for both offenses as they collected five hits apiece. Bohorquez led the Patriots with a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Devine drove in the other run, while Reid Battles finished with the other run scored.

The two teams are back in action tomorrow at Edelen-Haydon Field when they wrap up the three-game series with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. ET.
