Softball drops doubleheader to No. 9 Lindsey Wilson

St. Catharine, Ky. -- The Patriot softball team (16-18, 3-9 MSC) fought an uphill battle on Tuesday afternoon when they hosted ninth-ranked Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) at Salt River Electric Field.

The Blue Raiders (24-10, 9-3 MSC) took the first game of the twinbill 13-0 in five innings and they made it a sweep after winning the second game 8-0.

Game 1: St. Catharine 0, Lindsey Wilson 13

Lindsey Wilson used an eight run fifth inning come away with the 13-0 victory in five innings. Tiffany Wickline (Georgetown, Ky.) took the loss after allowing 12 runs – five earned – on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work in the circle. Wickline (9-8) also struck out six.

Lexi Fugate (Bedford, Ind.) entered the game with two outs in the eight run fifth inning and allowed one unearned run on four hits.

The Blue Raiders jumped on the Patriots with three runs in the first inning. They also scored two runs in the fourth before sealing the win with the eight run fifth inning.

The Patriots had a chance in the opening frame with a pair of two-out base hits by Kelsey Gravens (Mt. Washington, Ky.) and Carly Benz (Louisville, Ky.), but never could get anything out of it.

The home team also got a one-out double by Emily Fenwick (Lebanon, Ky.) in the third inning, but just like the first inning, they couldn’t get the key hit.

Game 2: St. Catharine 0, Lindsey Wilson 8

In the second game, the Patriot offense struggled as they scattered five base hits in the 8-0 loss. Jennifer Ortega (Delano, Calif.) started the game and tossed three innings allowing six runs – four earned – on five hits.

Senior right-hander, Brittany McKee (Somerset, Ky.) pitched the final four innings allowing two runs on four hits.

Just like the first game, the Patriots had their chances throughout. In the opening inning, they had the bases loaded with two outs, but Lindsey Wilson starter, Lyndsey Parden, got one of her 13 strikeouts to end the threat.

The Patriots got back-to-back singles by Miranda Whelan (Palmyra, Ind.) and Tiffany Wickline in the fifth inning, but Parden closed the door with a fly out and fielder’s choice to end the inning.

Lindsey Wilson scored single runs in the first two innings as well as a four run third inning before adding two more in the seventh stanza to come away with the 8-0 victory.
