Bat Pats recover in Game two in split with Oakland City

Oakland City, Ind. -- The St. Catharine baseball team stepped out of Mid-South Conference play on Tuesday afternoon when they traveled to Oakland City (Ind.).

The Mighty Oaks (14-11) won the first game of the doubleheader 2-0, but the Patriots (24-12) battled back to win the second game 2-1.

Game 1: St. Catharine 0, Oakland City 2

After neither team scored in the first four innings, Oakland City scored two runs in the fifth inning to come away with the 2-0 win.

Junior right-hander, Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) took the loss for the Patriots after allowing two runs – one earned – on four hits. Quinones (0-2) fanned six in five innings of work. Dylan Manley (Frankfort, Ky.) pitched the final inning allowing just two hits.

The Patriots had their chances in the first two innings where they collected five of their seven hits for the game.

With two outs in the first inning, Quinones got a two-out base knock and reached second on a wild pitch. Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) then reached on a walk and Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) singled to load the bases, but the Mighty Oaks got a fly out to end the threat.

Evan Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) led off the second inning with a single and two batters later Reid Battles (Denton, Texas) legged out a bunt single. Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) also singled, but just like the first inning, Oakland City avoided any damage.

From the second inning on, the Patriot offense could only muster up two hits. The first by Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) in the fifth inning and the other by Josh Wenning in the seventh.

The second game headed to extra innings after the game was tied 1-1, but the Patriots broke the tie in the ninth thanks to Alfredo Bohorquez who tripled and scored on an errant throw by the second baseman giving his team the 2-1 victory.

St. Catharine threw five different arms with Jake McCoy (Mesa, Ariz.) getting the win. McCoy (1-2) tossed 1.1 innings allowing just one hit to go with three strikeouts. Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, DR) picked up his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Conner Lindsay (Nicholasville, Ky.) started the game lasting four innings allowing one run on one hit. James Davenport (Louisville, Ky.) and Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, Ky.) pitched the final 2.2 allowing just two hits combined.

The Patriots got on the board first in the opening inning with one run. Alfredo Bohorquez reached on an error and advanced to second on a stolen base. Hector Quinones doubled to deep center scoring Bohorquez from second giving the Patriots the 1-0 lead.

The Mighty Oaks tied the game up at 1-1 when they scored a run in the second inning. The game would remain tied until St. Catharine scored in the ninth inning. Carlos Cespedes sealed the 2-1 win in the bottom half with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Up Next: Luther Bramblett’s ball club will now turn their attention to this weekend when they travel to Shawnee State (Ohio) for a three-game series. The two teams are scheduled to play a nine-inning game on Friday followed by a doubleheader on Saturday.
