Bat Pats claw out split with Shawnee State

Portsmouth, Ohio -- After getting a come from behind victory over Shawnee State (Ohio) on Friday afternoon, the Patriot baseball team was back at it today with the Bears in Portsmouth, Ohio.

The Bears (15-21, 5-7 MSC) took the first game of today’s doubleheader 4-2, but the Patriots (26-13, 6-6 MSC) battled back to win the second game 7-3 to come away with the series victory, two games to one.

Game 1: St. Catharine 2, Shawnee State 4

The Bears got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the opening frame off Joan Pena (New York, N.Y.). Pena (5-3) finished the day with eight strikeouts in six innings of work allowing four runs on seven hits.

James Davenport (Louisville, Ky.) followed Pena and pitched the seventh and eighth innings. Davenport fanned two allowing one hit in two innings on the mound.

After the Bears scored two in the first inning, the Patriots cut the lead in half with a run in the third inning. Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) was hit and was on his way to second when he forced an errant throw from the catcher that allowed Bohorquez to score.

Shawnee State answered the run Patriots’ run with a run of their own in the bottom half extending their lead to 3-1. The Patriots came back in the fifth inning when they put another run on the board.

Reid Battles (Denton, Texas) led off the inning with a single. Battles made his way to third after a passed ball and a stolen base with one out. Bohorquez hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Battles from third.

The Bears came back with a run in the bottom of the fifth to make the final score 4-2. From the fifth inning on, Patriots failed to get a base hit off of Shawnee State starter, Josh Eplin. Eplin tossed a complete game allowing two runs – one earned – on four hits.

Game 2: St. Catharine 7, Shawnee State 3

In the nightcap, the Patriots used a combination of four different arms with junior right-hander, Marvin Galarza (Arecibo, PR) picking up the victory. Galarza (6-1) allowed two runs on seven hits in four innings of work.

Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, Ky.), Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, DR) and Jake McCoy (Mesa, Ariz.) combined to throw the final three innings. Jones allowed one run, while Cespedes and McCoy allowed one and two hits, respectively.

St. Catharine got on the board first taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning. In the inning, Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) ripped a single to right field to score Alfredo Bohorquez who reached on a fielder’s choice earlier in the inning.

The visitors were right back at it the next inning, this time it was three runs to make their lead 4-0. Alfredo Bohorquez and Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) each had an RBI single, while Nicco Lollio drove in a run when he reached on a fielder’s choice.

Shawnee State came back and scored two runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to cut the lead to 4-3, but the Patriots added to their lead with two runs in the fourth.

After one quick out, Alfredo Bohorquez ripped a triple to right field. The next batter, Hector Quinones grounded out scoring Bohorquez. Nicco Lollio then stepped to the plate and blasted his sixth home run of the season to make the lead 6-3.

The Patriots added a run in the sixth making the final score 7-3. Lollio led the way at the plate going 2-for-4 with three RBI’s and a run scored. Hector Quinones added a 2-for-3 day at with two RBI’s.

Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) and Alfredo Bohorquez were the catalyst for the Patriot offense, scoring five of the seven runs, while also going 2-for-3 at the dish. Bohorquez finished with and RBI, while Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, Ind.) pitched in with two hits.

Up Next: St. Catharine is back in action on Tuesday when they host Brescia (Ky.). Following their mid-week affair with the Bearcats, the Patriots host Pikeville (Ky.) for a three-game series next weekend.
