Patriots hit six home runs in twinbill sweep vs. UPIKE

St. Catharine, Ky. -- The St. Catharine softball team hit six home runs to come away with a twinbill sweep against Pikeville (Ky.) at Salt River Electric Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Patriots (21-25, 7-15 MSC) scored in four out of the five innings in the opener to come away with the 15-5 win in five innings. In the second game, they hit three home runs en route to a 9-5 win and a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Bears (14-23, 8-14 MSC).

Game 1: St. Catharine 15, Pikeville 5

In the first game, the Patriots scored 15 runs on 15 hits to walk away with the 15-5 win. Tiffany Wickline (Georgetown, Ky.) took home the win for the Patriots in the circle. Wickline (10-10) pitched four innings allowing five runs – four earned – on six hits.

Wickline allowed a leadoff double in the top of the fifth inning and was pulled for Brittany McKee (Somerset, Ky.). McKee recorded the final three outs and didn’t allow a hit.

St. Catharine got on the board first in the opening inning with two runs. Carly Benz (Brooks, Ky.) hit one on a line that barely cleared the right field fence for a two-run home run that also scored Miranda Whelan (Ramsey, Ind.).

After Pikeville scored three runs in the top of the second inning, the Patriots came right back with one more in the bottom half. This time it was Emily Fenwick (Lebanon, Ky.) who singled up the middle scoring Tiffany Wickline to tie the game up at 3-3.

UPIKE scored another run in the third, but the Patriots came back in the bottom half in a big way scoring nine runs on seven hits in the inning. The bottom of the fifth inning saw 15 batters come to the plate with 12 of those reaching base safely.

Tiffany Wickline delivered the big hit in the inning when she took a 0-2 pitch and blasted it over the center field fence for a grand slam. Emily Fenwick and Brittany McKee both recorded an RBI single, while Caitlyn Blair (LaGrange, Ky.) ripped a two-run single in the inning.

After UPIKE added a run in the top of the fifth inning, the Patriots needed just one run to get a run-rule victory in five innings. They got that and much more in the fifth thanks to Kelsey Gravens (Mt. Washington, Ky.) who ripped a three-run home run making the final score 15-5.

Three different Patriots recorded three hits at the dish. Gravens led the way going 3-for-4 with three RBI’s and two runs scored. Emily Fenwick and Brittany McKee each went 3-for-4 and scored once, while Fenwick tallied two RBI’s and McKee drove in one run.

Caitlyn Blair and Taylor Lewis (Spring, Texas) both had two hits, while Blair had two RBI’s and Lewis scored once. Tiffany Wickline recorded four RBI’s and three runs scored and Carly Benz added two RBI’s and two runs scored.

Game 2: St. Catharine 9, Pikeville 5

The Patriot offense wasn’t as explosive in the second game as it was the first, but they still came away with the 9-5 win. Jennifer Ortega (Delano, Calif.) started the game and tossed two innings allowing five runs – two earned – on two hits.

After the Bears scored two runs in the first inning, the Patriots cut the deficit in half with one run in the bottom half. With two quick outs, Miranda Whelan took a 1-0 pitch for a ride over the left field fence for a solo home run.

Pikeville scored three runs in the top of the second inning, but from that point on Lexi Fugate (Bedford, Ind.) and Brittany McKee shutdown the Bears. Fugate (3-3) took home the win allowing two hits in three innings, while McKee pitched the final two innings allowing three hits.

Trailing 5-1 heading into the bottom of the second inning, the Patriots began to seize the momentum. After Jennifer Ortega singled and Lynsie Clark (Morgantown, Ky.) walked, Tiffany Wickline ripped a triple that scored Ortega and Clark cutting the lead to 5-3 after two complete.

St. Catharine was right back at it in the third and fourth innings scoring one run each tying the game up at 5-5. Emily Fenwick hit a solo home run in the third inning, while Tiffany Wickline followed suite in the fourth inning and ripped a solo shot to tie the game up.

The Patriots finally took the lead with four runs in the fifth inning. Lynsie Clark pushed the first run across with an RBI single. Then, Kelsey Gravens reached on an error that allowed two runs to score. Tiffany Wickline scored the final run on a wild pitch to make the score 9-5.

Brittany McKee closed the door on the Bears in the sixth and seventh innings to seal the 9-5 win and the doubleheader sweep.

Tiffany Wickline led the way at the plate going 2-for-2 with three RBI’s and two runs scored. Miranda Whelan added a 2-for-3 day with an RBI and two runs, while Lynsie Clark drove a run and scored twice. Emily Fenwick and Kelsey Gravens each finished with one RBI.
