Patriot men shoot down Eagles

In the words of St. Catharine head coach Tim Wolz, Wednesday’s soccer match against Spalding University was “very high spirited”. And the spirits of Wolz and his Patriots went even higher following the 1-0 victory over the Eagles.

“From what I understand it was the first time we have beaten Spalding in eight years,” said Wolz who is in his first year at the helm of the Patriots’ program. “It was a good win for us.”

It was a win decided by the goal from Jonathan Engstrom, a junior midfielder, who scored with 24 minutes to play off an assist from Chad Austin. That was the winning goal but Wolz was more ready to talk about an overall team effort.

“Will Johnston (goalkeeper) was massive out there,” added Wolz. “But all of our guys were focused for this game. We were dangerous offensively and our freshmen really stepped up.”

The win gave the Patriots a 3-3-1 record while the Eagles fell to 0-5-1 as they work through a tough early season schedule.

The Patriots next action will be a conference game on the road Saturday when they visit Shawnee State. They are back home Tuesday (September 28) to take on conference foe Campbellsville.
