Bat Pats rack up postseason honors

St. Catharine, Ky. -- With the regular season over and the Mid-South Conference Baseball Tournament Opening Round beginning tomorrow, conference officials announced the postseason honors Wednesday.

Senior right-hander, Daniel Lerma was named the Mid-South Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Year, while teammate Alfredo Bohorquez was named the MSC Baseball Player of the Year. Freshman right-hander, Joseph Martin also garnered Co-Freshman of the Year honors.

Lerma, a native of Oxnard, Calif. led the Mid-South with a 1.53 earned run average and allowed opponents to hit to just .203. Within conference play, he boasts a 3-1 record with a 0.96 ERA. He has tossed a conference-high 88 innings this season while posting a 5-4 record overall.

Lerma’s numbers not only rank among the best in the conference, but also nationally. His 1.53 ERA ranks ninth in the NAIA, while his 7.33 innings pitched per game ranks fifth overall. He also ranks 13th in total innings pitched (88).

Junior shortstop, Alfredo Bohorquez ranks in the top 10 in eight offensive categories in the MSC. He is leading the league in stolen bases with 32 swipes on the year and also leads the conference in triples with 11.

Bohorquez holds a .341 batting average which ranks 10th in the MSC, while his 46 runs ranks second. His .545 slugging percentage is fourth, while he also ranks in the top 10 in hits (57), total bases (91) and on-base percentage (.449).

He also ranks in seven different categories nationally. He ranks second in the Division I in total triples (11), while his 32 stolen bases ranks 10th in the NAIA.

Joseph Martin along with Georgetown’s (Ky.) Ryan Garner were named Co-Freshman of the Year. In his first season as a Patriot, Martin posted a 4-1 record with a 2.12 ERA. The Fort Thomas, Ky. native struck out 26 batters in 34 innings pitched for the Patriots.

Lerma, Bohorquez and Martin weren’t the only Patriots to bring home postseason honors. St. Catharine also had five players selected to the first team all-conference and another received second team all-conference honors.

Joining Daniel Lerma  and Alfredo Bohorquez on the first team were, catcher Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, Ind.), utility player Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) and relief pitcher Jake McCoy (Mesa, Ariz.).

Senior Drew Kissel and junior Alfredo Bohorquez are making their second straight appearance on the first team, while Jake McCoy received second team honors in 2014. Daniel Lerma and Hector Quinones are both making their first career appearance on the first team.

Senior outfielder, Nicco Lollio rounded out the all-conference honors by representing St. Catharine on the second team all-conference. The Brownstown, Mich. native is making his first appearance on the all-conference list after joining the Patriots at the break.

Nine individuals were also named to the conference’s gold glove team based on field percentage throughout the season at each position. Taking home his third consecutive Golden Glove Award was shortstop Alfredo Bohorquez.

The player of the year, pitcher of the year, freshman of the year and all-conference selections were voted on the by the coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players.

The St. Catharine baseball team begins postseason play on Thursday afternoon when they travel to Pikeville (Ky.) for a 3 p.m. ET first pitch. Live video and live stats are being provided by Pikeville.
