Patriots defeat Cumberlands, but fall to Lindsey Wilson

Bowling Green, Ky. -- The St. Catharine softball team saw their season come to an end on Saturday afternoon when they lost their second game in the Mid-South Conference Softball Tournament at Michael O. Buchanon Park in Bowling Green, Ky.

The Patriots advanced to the semifinals of the consolation bracket after getting a 5-2 victory over Cumberlands (Ky.). They were then forced to play Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) who ended St. Catharine’s season after they defeated the Patriots 4-0.

Holly Smith’s squad ends the 2016 campaign with a 26-30 record overall and a 10-18 mark in the Mid-South Conference. For the second season in a row, the Patriots finished the season in fifth place in the Mid-South.

Game 1: St. Catharine 5, Cumberlands 2

With the game tied at 2-2 after 5.5 innings, the Patriots plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to come away with the 5-2 win.

Brittany McKee (Somerset, Ky.) tossed a complete game in the circle. McKee (5-2) fanned four in seven innings of work allowing two runs – one earned – on six hits.

St. Catharine took a 1-0 lead after one inning of play with a run in the bottom of the first. Emily Fenwick (Lebanon, Ky.) reached on a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt. Miranda Whelan (Ramsey, Ind.) then ripped a double to score Fenwick from second.

The Patriots extended their lead to 2-0 when they added a run in the third inning. Kelsey Gravens (Mt. Washington, Ky.) led it off with a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt, but this time it was Taylor Lewis (Spring, Texas) who doubled to score Gravens from second.

Cumberlands (21-31) battled back in the top of the fifth when they scored two runs to tie the game up at 2-2. The St. Catharine offense broke through in the sixth when they scored three runs on four hits.

Caitlyn Blair (LaGrange, Ky.) started the rally with a single and Kourtney Current (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) was called upon to pinch run for Blair. Tiffany Wickline (Georgetown, Ky.) scored the go ahead run when she ripped a double to score Current from first.

After Wickline moved up to third on the throw, Lynsie Clark (Morgantown, Ky.) singled to score Wickline from third. Katie Hansgen (Fern Creek, Ky.) pinch ran for Clark and scored on a double by Kelsey Gravens to end the rally giving the Patriots the 5-2 win.

Game 2: St. Catharine 0, Lindsey Wilson 4

Against the Blue Raiders, the Patriot offense could only muster up three hits as they failed to get the key hit when they needed it the most. Lindsey Wilson (43-11) scored two runs in both the first and fifth innings to come away with the 4-0 win.

Junior right-hander, Tiffany Wickline started the game for the Patriots and was dealt with the loss. Wickline (12-12) tossed six innings allowing four runs on 11 hits.

St. Catharine had their chances throughout the game, but couldn’t come up with the big hit. In the second, Caitlyn Blair and Tiffany Wickline reached on back-to-back two-out walks, but Lindsey Wilson was able to get out of the jam.

The Patriots had another chance in the fourth inning. Britany McKee reached on a one-out walk and Tiffany Wickline singled to push McKee to third. Wickline wisely moved up on the throw. But once again Lindsey Wilson starter, Lyndsey Parden got out of the threat.

Parden struck out 11 Patriots in seven innings of work while allowing four free passes and three hits. The final chance for the Patriots came in the sixth when they had runners at first and second with two outs, but the Blue Raiders ended the threat with a fielder’s choice.
