Bat Pats fall to Campbellsville 5-0
May 6, 2016Bowling Green, Ky. -- The St.
Catharine baseball continued play in the Mid-South Conference Baseball
Tournament today when they took on Campbellsville (Ky.) at Bowling Green
Ballpark in Bowling Green, Ky.
The Tigers
(34-15) plated two runs in the sixth and added three more runs in the eighth
inning to hand the Patriots (34-21) a 5-0 loss. St. Catharine will now face
elimination tomorrow against Cumberland (Tenn.)
at 4 p.m. ET.
Senior
right-hander, Daniel Lerma (Oxnard, Calif.) pitched well, but was dealt with
the loss. Lerma (6-5) – who was named MSC Pitcher of the Year – tossed six
innings allowing two runs on six hits. He also finished with four strikeouts.
After neither
team scored in the first five innings Campbellsville struck first with two runs
in the sixth. The Tigers got a one out single followed by back-to-back RBI doubles
to plate two runs taking a 2-0 lead after six complete.
Lerma was pulled
after six innings and James Davenport (Louisville, Ky.) was brought in from the
bullpen. Davenport got a quick 1-2-3 seventh inning to keep the Patriots within
striking distance at 2-0.
Campbellsville
added three runs in the eighth inning off of Austin Willis-Greene (Manhattan, N.Y.).
Willis-Greene got one out in the eighth, but was pulled for Dylan Manley
(Frankfort, Ky.). Manley recorded the final two outs, but the Patriots still
trailed 5-0.
St. Catharine
had their chances throughout the game, but couldn’t come up with the big hit
off Nick Przybylek. Mario Morales started the game, but pitched 1.1 innings
before leaving to an apparent injury. Przybylek tossed 6.1 innings and scatted five
hits with six strikeouts.
One of the
chances for the Patriots came in the opening inning when Alfredo Bohorquez
(Maracaibo, Venezuela) reached on a one-out walk. Bohorquez stole second and
moved to third on a throwing error by the Tigers’ catcher, but Campbellsville
got out of the jam with a strikeout.
The Patriots
didn’t present a true threat again until the seventh inning when Nicco Lollio
(Brownstown, Mich.) doubled off the right-center field wall to open the inning.
Two batters later, Evan Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) singled to left, but Lollio
was thrown out trying to score.
St. Catharine
made one last attempt in the ninth inning when Hector Quinones (Barceloneta,
PR) reached second on a dropped fly by the right fielder, but Campbellsville
left the runner stranded at second to seal the 5-0 win.
The Patriots had
just five hits off a trio of Campbellsville pitchers. Alfredo Bohorquez, Nicco Lollio
and Evan Smith all had one hit, while Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) and Reid Battles (Denton, Texas) added one hit each.
