Lady Patriots Have Trouble Putting The Bat On The Ball At Union

The St.Catharine College softball team traveled to Barbourville, KY to take on the Lady Bulldogs of Union College.

The Lady Patriots struggled to put the bat on the ball against the very good pitching of Union College. Freshman Katelin Mulloy took the mound for her first collegiate start. She pitched well but gave up several hits and a couple of walks that hurt the Lady Patriots.

Sophomore Amber Matteoli went 1 for 2. Sophomore Justine Paddock walked and hit into a fielder's choice. Freshman Kasie Prather went 1 for 2. Freshman Devin Gore reached on an error. These are the only times the Lady Patriots reached the base path, losing the game 0-10 in 5 innings.

In game 2, Junior Sharonda Mangan took the mound but again the Lady Patriots struggled to put the bat on the ball. Mangan held the Lady Bulldogs to only 2 runs before loading the bases as Matteoli took the mound giving up a grand slam (1 earned and 2 unearned runs for Mangan and one earned for Matteoli).

Junior Megan Cheuvront went 2 for 3 with a double.  Matteoli went 1 for 2 with a double and a walk. Leaving nearly all the rest of the Lady Patriots striking out.  The Lady Patriots fell in game two 0-6.

Head Coach Holly Smith's comments after the game:"Overall, we didn't play too bad defensively. During game 1, we had a critical error that really hurt us and we allowed Union too many opportunties to score.  Game 2, Mangan pitched a good game and so did Matteoli, other than a couple missed spots that they took advantage of. Bottom line is you can't win if you don't put the bat on the ball and that is what happened to us today."
