Patriots Sweep Basketball Doubleheader at UVA-Wise

            The St. Catharine College men and women swept a Mid-South Conference basketball doubleheader Thursday night at UVA-Wise. Lena Bramblett’s women came away with an 84-73 win in the opener and J.T. Burton’s men won the nightcap 85-62. 

            The Patriot women held a slim 36-34 lead at halftime but pulled away after intermission for the 11 point victory. Nearly half the Patriots’ points in the second half came at the foul line where they hit 21 of 26 free throws. They were 26-33 on charity tosses for the game.

            Sa’de Mullins, 9-10 at the foul line led the Patriots with 21 points. Courtney Milam added 16 and Sara Sexton scored a season high 14 points off the bench.

            The Patriots shot 43 percent for the game while the Cavaliers were 36 percent from the field. Sexton and Mullins had eight rebounds apiece as St. Catharine outrebounded UVA-Wise 47-39.

            The win gives the Patriots a 10-16 overall mark and a 5-9 MSC record. The Cavaliers dropped to 9-13 overall and 3-11 in the conference.

            In what may have been the best conference performance of the season, the Patriot men clobbered the Cavaliers 85-62. They dominated the game from the outset in building a 45-27 halftime advantage.

            The Patriots shot 50 percent to just 35 percent for UVA-Wise. They outrebounded the Cavaliers 51-31 and had eight blocked shots.

            Kashiff Carr came off the bench to lead the Patriots in scoring with 22 points in just 19 minutes played. Antione Watson had 17 and Xavier Keeling added 10.

            St. Catharine is now 10-4 in the Mid-South Conference and tied with Pikeville for third place. The Patriots are 16-6 overall. UVA-Wise is 9-14 overall and 3-11 in the conference.
