Patriots edge Tigers in OT

Watson's last second tip-in wins it

After a tough loss at Life University (Marietta, Georgia) on Tuesday, the St. Catharine College Patriots had to regroup for a key Mid-South Conference contest on Saturday at Campbellsville University.

And it took 44 minutes and 59 seconds to claim the victory but J.T. Burton’s bunch escaped with a78-76 win on a tip-in by Antoine Watson with less than one second to play in overtime.

“Unreal,” said Burton after the game that allowed the Patriots to remain in a second place tie with Cumberlands, a team they will host Thursday, in the MSC standings. “”We knew that it would be a tough game because they play really well at home. I thought we played well defensively and had a real team effort on offense.”

The final offense came after the Tigers’ Brett Crittenden had a chance to give Campbellsville the lead with 10 seconds to go as he shot two free throws. But after hitting the first, he missed the second and Kashiff Carr fired a three pointer from the left wing that was off target but Watson tipped the miss in with  0.8 seconds to play. The Tigers (15-13, 8-8) were not able to get off a final shot.

A team effort, indeed for the Patriots who had three players record double-doubles in the game. Carr finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Watson had 13 points and 10 boards and Ervin Williams scored 11 points and collected 12 rebounds.

Rebounding was definitely a key in the Patriots’ win as they won that battle 53-29 which included 24 offensive rebounds.

Caleb Harris led the Tigers with 23 points while Shawn Savage added 18.

The victory improves the Patriots’ record to 12-4 in the MSC . Cumberlands will also bring a 12-4 slate into Thursday’s game.
