Patriots head to Frankfort after Wise win

Women top Cavaliers 99-73

It took one extra game to make it there but Lena Bramblett’s St. Catharine College women will be heading to Frankfort Thursday to begin the Mid-South Conference tournament. They made the eight-team field in exciting fashion with a 99-73 win Monday over visiting UVA-Wise.

The Patriots (12-19) shot 60 percent from the field including 13-22 from 3-point range. They took a 45-36 halftime lead and were never threatened as they made 10-15 from long range after intermission.

Five Patriots scored in double figures led by Courtney Milam’s 23 points. Carol Ruiz-Lopez added 18, Rianne Hofstratt had 12 and Danielle Brown and Reena Haliburton scored 10 each. Point guard Machera Calhoun had eight assists and just two turnovers.

St. Catharine now moves on to the Frankfort Convention Center where they will play top seeded Campbellsville Thursday at 4:00 in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference tournament. UVA Wise, led by Kristin Mullins and Meghan Rutherford with 16 points each, finished the season at 11-17.
