Patriot women run at Bellarmine

The St. Catharine College track and field teams haven’t yet recruited enough athletes to compete for team titles at any meets. But first year coach Blake Jones is encouraged by the improvement his runners have shown each time out this spring.

That improvement continued Saturday at the Bellarmine University Invitational in Louisville. Three Patriots recorded personal records at the meet. And the Patriots were able to place in the top ten in three events on the cold, blustery, rainy day that brought 17 teams to Bellarmine..

“Even with the conditions they had fun competing,” said Jones. “And we continue to improve. I think they can see now how good they can be once they really train. They hadn’t done anything until I got here (mid-January).”

The best performances of the day were by Michelle Dunaway who finished ninth in the long jump with a distance of 4.55 meters. Symfonee Henderson placed ninth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.42. Troy Mattingly placed eighth in the high jump with a leap of 1.68 meters. Mattingly also recorded a personal best in the 800 meter run at 2:17.89.

St. Catharine will conclude the season April 29-30 at the Mid-South Conference meet held at the University of Rio Grande.
