Bat Pats outlast RedStorm - rain storm-in 12 innings

Luis Zeledon's dramatic homer ties game in 12th

During the first game of the post-season at the University of Rio Grande (Ohio) on Friday it appeared for a while that the St. Catharine College Bat Pats would lose out either to a rain storm, or the homestanding RedStorm. But Luther Bramblett’s nine outlasted both to win the game 5-4 in 12 innings.

The game, the late innings played in the rain, was the first of the best of three series with the winner advancing to the Mid-South Conference double elimination tournament to be played among the final six teams next weekend in Campbellsville. Game two of the series is scheduled for 11:00 am Saturday with game three, if necessary, at 3:00.

St. Catharine (29-24) grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, on a RBI single by Juan Moriel (San Diego, CA) and a run scoring double by Tyler Mischel (St. Louis, MO) following Carlos Hernandez’ (Fresno, CA) leadoff double. They made that 2-0 lead stand until the top of the ninth inning.

Tim Paxton (Louisville, KY) had tossed shutout ball for 6 2/3 innings before giving way to reliever Adam Gillcrist (Burlington, KY) who pitched one inning. Anthony Thorn (Elizabethtown, KY) worked two-thirds of an inning and left after the first two batters of the ninth inning reached base.

With the help of two St. Catharine errors, both of those runners scored when Matt Wagner ( Brooks, KY)took over on the mound for the Bat Pats, relieving Thorn. Then the RedStorm scored on sacrifice fly to take a 3-2 lead.

But the Bat Pats rallied in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score when Jeremy Turpin (Lawrenceburg, KY) was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a single by Mischel. And the score stood at 3-3 until the 12th inning.

With Wagner still on the hill, the RedStorm (28-22) took a 4-3 lead with two outs in the 12th on a homer by Francisco Ramirez. . But in dramatic fashion, Luis Zeledon (Los Angeles, CA) hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 12th (SC had won a coin toss to determine home team) on an 0-2 count with two outs to knot the game at 4-4. Then, after Adam Blair (Lebanon, KY) was hit by a pitch for the third time in the game, Turpin doubled off the diving right fielder’s glove and Blair slid in home just ahead of the tag with the winning run.

Juan Moriel went 3-3 with a RBI and a run scored. He also walked twice and had a sacrifice bunt. Carlos Hernandez, Luis Zeledon, Tyler Mischel and Jeremy Turpin had two hits apiece.

Matt Wagner (6-1) pitched four innings to get the victory. He allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits. The sophomore right hander walked one and struck out six.
