Bat Pats Advance to MSC Final Six

Series at Rio washed out after one game

The first series of the Mid-South Conference was scheduled to be a best two of three series when St. Catharine visited the University of Rio Grande last weekend But Mother Nature came to bat and ended the series after one game.

And Luther Bramblett’s Bat Pats were the beneficiaries of the incessant storms as they won the series by virtue of their 5-4 victory Friday. That win advances St. Catharine to the Mid-South Conference Tournament’s final six teams who will play Thursday through Sunday at Campbellsville University.

The Bat Pats will open that double elimination tournament Thursday at 7:00 against the host Campbellsville Tigers who are the tournament’s top seed after winning the regular season title. During the regular season Campbellsville won three of four games against St. Catharine.

While St. Catharine enters the tournament as the sixth seed, Bramblett is confident that his team can compete. “We have played all of the teams in the tournament except for UVA-Wise and we beat each of them at least once,” said the Patriots’ skipper.

But Bramblett knows that the opening game against Campbellsville will be a big challenge. “They are well coached, very talented with some very good arms. We have to get the key hits with men on base when we have a chance. At this stage it isn’t always the best team who wins but the team that gets hot at the right time.”

The Mid-South Conference tournament will continue Friday with the final scheduled for Sunday.  Campbellsville has already earned a bid to the regional tournament by winning the regular season championship. The tournament champion will gain the other automatic bid given to the Mid-South Conference. If Campbellsville wins the tournament, then the runner-up will advance.
