Patriots Compete in Conference Meet

The St. Catharine College track teams traveled Saturday to the University of Rio Grande to compete in the Mid-South Conference Track & Field Championships. With a limited number of athletes for first year coach Blake Jones, the Patriot women finished ninth in the ten-team field while the SC women were ninth among the nine women’s teams that competed.

“There is definitely potential for these athletes,” said Jones. “They can see now how much hard work will pay off and how much they still need to improve to be competitive at the conference or national level.”

Personal records were turned in by many of the St. Catharine runners. Michelle Dunaway finished sixth in the long jump to earn three points with a distance of 15.4 feet. Samantha Osborn placed fifth in the pole vault at 7’6” to earn 3.5 points.

On the men’s side, Sam Kpoh took fifth place and won four points in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.1. Troy Mattingly jumped 5.47 feet in the high jump which was good for seventh place and two points. Mattingly also ran seventh in the 110 meter hurdles at 19.01 which was earned two points.

Dunaway also recorded a personal best in the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:38.Symfonee Henderson ran her best times in both the 100 meter dash (13.4) and the 200 meter dash (28.42).

“Everyone that went to the meet were freshmen except Symfonee who is a sophomore so we will have all of them back plus some good runners who redshirted this year,” added Jones. “With our new track to be completed soon they should be able to make notable improvements.”
