St. Catharine College soccer will see British invasion

St. Catharine College soccer coach Tim Wolz headed to England on a recruiting trip a few months ago, hoping that the time and expense of the trip would pay off by bringing some quality players into the Patriot fold.

And now the Patriot mentor has seen the fruits of his long journey. Already signed for the 2011 season are Anthony Steele, a midfielder from Kent and Ashley Woods, a midfielder from Manchester. Also expected to ink a scholarship offer soon is Jonathan Read, an outside defender from Kent. In addition, Wolz earlier signed Jeff warren, a standout centre back from Ontario.

“This is a great recruiting class,” said Wolz who will be in his second season at the Patriot helm. “We have filled some needs at starting spots. But more importantly is the depth that we will have. My overall goal was to make our team competitive at every position. These players will be fighting for every position every day.”

Also included in the banner year of recruiting is a pair of midfielders from Waggener High school in Louisville. Chance Katemo and Henry Ita, both originally from Africa, will help provide the depth and athleticism that Wolz needs to compete in the Mid-South Conference. Also

“We think our conference is the toughest in the nation,” said Wolz. Last year you had three teams in the top 25 all year and Campbellsville just out of the top 25.”

But Wolz, whose team was 10-12-1 overall and 2-6 in the conference last season, feels confident that his team will be competitive in the upcoming season. “Last year we started eight freshmen and sophomores so we were very young. We will still be young but our experience should help us win some of the close games we lost last year. We need to overcome the mindset that it is okay just to stay close. It is not okay to lose and that is what these players will bring to
