Lady Patriots Drop Opener

The opening match of the 2011 season started great for the St. Catharine Women's Soccer team but ended in disappointment Wednesday.  After taking the lead in the early going, and despite out-shooting their opponents 21 to 14, the Lady Patriots surrendered 2 goals in each half to wind up on the wrong end of a 4-2 score.

The Patriots played host to Ohio Mid Western University, a first year team playing its first ever varsity game.  St. Catharine jumped on top early when Paola Martinez put away a deflected pass from Emily Caras just 4 minutes into the game.  OMW would fight back, holding the ball in the SC half and evening the score when Kayla Bush collected a long through pass from Marcela Salum and slotted it into the goal.  OMW would then take a 2-1 lead late in the half on a goal by Sydney Kurz.

Facing a 2-1 deficit, the Patriots came out strong in the second half and earned several chances.  A header to the corner was turned away on a terrific save by OMW goalkeeper, Stacy Shuckman, and a runout by SC's Emily Caras was similarly saved by Shuckman to keep the score 2-1.  Eighteen minutes into the half, OMW's Kayla Bush intercepted a pass and finished a shot to give OMW a 3-1 lead.

SC would again fight back and earn several chances on the OMW goal, including another runout by Caras that was saved by the 'keeper and a pair of shots on goal by Porshia Clark.  With 11 minutes left, Krista Russell beat an OMW defender and was fouled in the penalty box to give SC a penalty kick.  Russell put the kick away to cut the deficit to just a goal.  With the run of play going their way, SC looked to even the score with a push into the OMW defensive end.  However, a counter attack and a strong individual play by OMW's Hope Ellis resulted in a goal with two minutes remaining to give OMW a 4-2 victory.

The Lady Patriots will be back in action, looking for their first victory of the season, on Saturday, September 3rd at 1:00 pm versus Ohio Christian University at Nelson County High School.
