Volleyball improves to 10-1 on Florida trip

Many people will head to Florida for the Labor Day weekend in hopes of putting some final touches on their suntan. Adam Stevenson’s volleyball team went, however, looking for some victories to boost what was already an impressive early season resume.

And the Patriots did just that as they left the Sunshine State with four wins in the five matches played at the Clearwater Christian College Tournament. Stevenson’s squad improved its record to 10-1. The only setback came Friday against the host school, the Clearwater Christian Cougars who captured the tournament title in improving their overall record to 6-0.

The Patriots opened play Friday with a 3-1 victory over Bryan College (Tennessee). The Lions, 1-4, won the first set 25-22 but St. Catharine regrouped to win the next three sets by scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 27-25.

Clearwater Christian then dealt the Patriots their only loss in a 3-1 match. After dropping the first set 25-21 the Patriots won the second set 25-22 but fell in the next two 25-14 and 25-22.

In Friday’s final match the Patriots topped Warner Southern (Florida) 3-1 by scores of 25-17, 15-25, 26-24, 25-18. The Royals fell to 2-2 with the loss.

The Patriots opened Saturday’s play with a straight set win over Trinity College of Florida 25-22, 28-26, 25-21. The tournament concluded Saturday afternoon with a hard fought win in five sets over Milligan (Tennessee). The Patriots found themselves down 2-1 after Milligan won sets one and three (25-20, 25-22) while St. Catharine won the second set 25-23. After staying alive with a fourth set victory 25-17, the Patriots won the match 15-12 in the fifth set.

The Patriots return to the court at Georgetown on Wednesday for the opener of Mid-South Conference play. That match begins at 7 pm against the Tigers who are ranked 22nd in the nation in the NAIA.
