Patriots outlast Campbellsville in MSC volleyball

SC wins in five sets

The St. Catharine College Patriots have now played two matches in the Mid-South Conference. And Adam Stevenson’s team found the results to be quite different. After dropping a 3-0 decision in the conference opener at Georgetown, the Patriots bounced back with a thrilling 3-2 victory Tuesday over visiting Campbellsville.

The match actually looked like it was headed for a 3-0 sweep for St. Catharine in front of a raucous crowd in Lourdes Hall.  The Patriots took set one 25-22 and set two 25-17. They led 23-21 in the third set but saw the Tigers, 4-3, score the final four points to extend the match.

The momentum continued to swing Campbellsville’s way as they won set four 25-21. But the Patriots, now 11-2 overall, jumped to a 2-0 lead in the final set and never trailed en route to a 15-8 win.

“It was a big win for us in that we have never beaten Campbellsville and it was our first win against any team ranked nationally in the pre-season,” said Stevenson.

The Patriots hit at a .227 mark for the game while the Tigers hit just .096. St. Catharine was led in kills by Allie Southard who had 13 kills and three blocks. The freshman middle hitter from Louisville hit at a team leading .393 clip. Porsha Ellison, a senior from Salem, Oregon, had eight kills while Shauna Stone (Cox’s Creek, Ky.) and Casey Stone (Princeton, Ky.) had eight and six kills respectively.

Freshman setter Charlotte Jewell (Mt. Washington, Ky.) also had six kills and 42 assists. Senior Mandy Gray (Princeton, Ky.) continued her march toward 2,000 career digs with 20 in the match. Gray now has 1,997 in her career.

The Patriots are home again Friday when they host Mid-Continent. The match was originally slated for 7:00 but has been moved back to 6:00.
