Patriot women bowlers take runner-up trophy in first tournament

             It was a good start to the new season for the St. Catharine College bowling teams as they competed last weekend in the Green River Classic at Phillips Lanes in Campbellsville. The Patriot women brought home the runner-up trophy in the eight team field while the St. Catharine men finished sixth place among the eighteen teams entered.

            “Our women finished last in six of eight tournaments last year so this is a big improvement,” said head coach Larry Luvisi. “And the guys finish was good because we lost to some good teams.

            Patriot freshman Devona Myers tied for second overall and was named to the women’s all-tournament team. The Louisville native rolled a 265 in her first game and finished with a four-game total of 750. Stephanie Thieneman, another freshman from Louisville, finished fourth overall with a 735.

            The host Campbellsville Tigers won the tournament, bettering the Patriots by 90 pins.

            On the men’s side, perennial power Pikeville finished first followed by the University of Louisville. The Pikeville B team was third Cumberland University was fourth and Lindenwood University was fifth. Jamie Wallingford, a sophomore from Nelson County High School, was the top bowler for the sixth place Patriots with a 750 total for four games.

Craig Cox, a freshman from Louisville, had a 732 total. He was followed by Jimmy Carroll, a junior from Owensboro, who rolled a 704. Corey Elliott (Somerset) had a 672 and Dylan Boggs (Nicholasville) had a 662. Brett Saltsman Louisville) bowled for the St. Catharine B team but actually ended up fourth overall among Patriot bowlers with a 676.

The Patriot men return to the alleys October 7-9 at the Brickyard Classic in Indianapolis. The women are back in action October 15-16 at the Orange and Black Classic hosted by Pikeville in Beavercreek, Ohio.
