Patriots Lose Tight Conference Match on the Road

Fall to University of the Cumberlands 1-0

After a long home stand to start the season, the St. Catharine Women's Soccer team began a 5 game road trip with a conference match at the University of the Cumberlands on Thursday.  A tight match ended with the home team winning 1-0.

The game was tightly contested from the beginning with St. Catharine threatening the Cumberlands goal in the early minutes.  Cumberlands held and made their own push forward into the St. Catharine defense.  Both teams had chances, but none struck home until the 17th minute when Cumberlands earned a corner kick.  The kick was played short and then served into the middle of the field for a shot that struck the crossbar and rebounded back into the field of play.  Cumberlands' Ginger Johnson won the loose ball and shot it into the net in what would prove to be the game winner.  Cumberlands held the better of the possession for the remainder of the first half.

St. Catharine came out with an attacking metality in the second half and pushed up the field for several chances to tie the game.  Several shots were close, but would sail just wide or were saved by the Cumberlands 'keeper.  Three late corner kicks gave St. Catharine chances to even up the game, but strong defensive plays by Cumberlands' Goalkeeper thwarted their efforts.  Time ran out with St. Catharine pressing, leaving the final score Cumberlands 1 - St. Catharine 0.

The loss drops St. Catharine to 3-5-0 overall and 1-2 in the conference.  The Lady Patriots will be in action again on Saturday at Midway College for a 2:00 pm match.
