Women's Soccer Splits in West Virginia

Beats Mountain State, Falls to West Virginia Tech

The St. Catharine Women's Soccer team made the long trip through West Virginia to take on two teams in two days.  After two hard fought games, the Lady Patriots returned home with a win and a loss.

On Saturday, the Patriots defeated the Cougars from Mountain State University by a 2-0 score.  Michelle Dunaway opened up the scoring with 3 minutes remaining in the first half by finishing off a pass from Carolynn Dreyer.  Chelsey Landrum scored late in the second half off a cross from Caitlin Campbell.  For the game, the Patriots had 12 shots on goal while the Cougars had none.

Sunday was a different story as the Patriots took on the a conference foe in the Golden Bears from West Virginia Tech.  The play was rough from the beginning with both teams trying to scratch out the victory.  West Virginia Tech would strike first with a goal in the 14th minute from inside the box and another from long distance in the 25th.  St. Catharine would strike back with a goal from Paige Long from an Emily Caras cross just before the half.

The second half would see inspired play early from the Patriots as they attacked the Golden Bear defense looking to even the score.  The leveling goal would come about 9 minutes in when Adrienne Bishop would cross a ball into the box and Paola Martinez would hammer it home on a diving header.  Shortly afterward, a controversial foul call in the penalty box would result in a penalty kick for the Golden Bears.  The resulting goal would give Tech the lead three to two and shift the momentum again.  St. Catharine had several good opportunities to even the score again to no avail.  A late Tech goal on a counter attack gave the Golden Bears the 4-2 victory.

The weekend split gives the Lady Patriots a 5-5-0 record on the season.  The next match is Tuesday at Oakland City University at 4pm Eastern time in Oakland City, Indiana.
