Late run allows Patriot women to climb over Mountaineers

According to head coach Lena Bramblett, her team was “awful” for the first 32 minutes of Tuesday’s game at Berea. But, after holding just a 49-37 lead at the point, the Patriot women rallied to win going away, 77-39.

“We had unforced errors, poor decision making and, basically, just being stupid,” said Bramblett after her team improved to 3-0 with the victory.

For the game the Patriots committed 24 turnovers but also dished out 17 assists. Berea,

0-2, had 34 turnovers and only four assists. St. Catharine also had a whopping 52-36 edge in rebounding.

Janae Howard led three Patriots in double figures with 27 points. Kasei Evans added 14 and Rianne Hofstraat had 10. Howard and Evans also led the Patriots on the boards with 13 and 10 rebounds respectively.

St. Catharine shot 43 percent from the field while the Mountaineers hit only 22 percent. The Patriots were 16-25 (64 percent) from the foul line while Berea was 8-12 (67 percent).

“I know have a lot of new players and it takes time to make adjustments in playing with each other. But passing to the players in the wrong jerseys doesn’t have anything to do with that,” added Bramblett.

The Patriots are 3-0 for the first time since joining the NAIA in 2008. They return to action at Martin Methodist next Wednesday.
