St. Catharine men end soccer season with tournament loss

It took the University of Rio Grande just 38 seconds to score against the visiting St. Catharine College Patriots Saturday night in the first round of the Mid-South Conference tournament. And, from there, things got no better as the RedStorm, ranked second nationally, scored seven goals in each half to end the Patriot’s season with a 14-0 win.

Rio Grande, 16-1, had 27 shots on goal against the two Patriot goalkeepers. Justin Mills had 10 saves in the first half and Zack Bailes had three in the second half. The Patriots, who finished the season 3-13-2, were able to get only two shots off in the game. Only one of those was on frame, that by Sawyer Abshire.

Rio Grande will move on to play Cumberlands today in the MSC semifinals. The other semifinal game matches number one ranked Lindsey Wilson, 16-0, against Campbellsville.

In an earlier game last week the Patriots fell 2-0 at Trevecca Nazarene in Nashville on Thursday. After a scoreless first half Trevecca, 8-8-1, scored two goals in the final five minutes of the game.

The Patriots managed three shots on goal for the game while Trevecca had seven. Bailes played all ninety minutes in goal, recording five saves.
