Patriots hold on for Life in Monday victory

It was Life University that visited Lourdes Hall Monday for a men’s basketball game. And it was J.T. Burton’s St. Catharine Patriots who held on for dear life in claiming a 107-103 victory.

The Patriots, 2-1, built what looked to be a safe 57-39 halftime lead but saw the Running Eagles, 3-1, storm back to get within two points twice in the game’s final minutes. Life’s Josh lee nailed a three pointer to make the score 105-103 with three seconds left. But Brandon Johnson sealed the win with two free throws with less than a second to play.

The contest contained two outstanding individual performances as P J Meyers scored 40 points for the visitors and Kashiff Carr netted 37 points for the Patriots. Meyers was 15-26 from the field while Carr was 9-19 from the field and 18-23 from the foul line.

Life also got 22 points from Chris Beasley, 13 from Andrew Woods and 12 from Josh Lee. Three Patriots joined Carr in double figures as Brandon Johnson had 20 points while DeShawn Mitchell and Stephan Pope had 15 and 14 respectively.

St. Catharine continued their accurate free throw shooting by hitting 75 percent (33-44) from the line. The Running Eagles were 19-24 (79 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Patriots are at home again Sunday with a rematch against Cumberland University who beat them 84-75 last Friday. That game is at 4:00.
