Georgetown outlasts Patriot men 87-78

  In a physical Mid-South Conference battle Thursday in Georgetown, the host Tigers fought off continued rallies by St. Catharine to claim an 87-78 victory, The win kept Georgetown perfect at 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the MSC. The Patriots fell to 5-4 and 1-1.

 

 

The Patriots trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half but scored the final nine points before intermission to trim the lead to 38-33. They kept the momentum early into the second half as they pulled within 41-40. But a 9-2 Tigers’ run put the lead back at eight points with 14 minutes to play.

St. Catharine pulled back within three points at 68-65 with 5:39 left but could get no closer. Maurice Pearson scored eight of his team leading 24 points in the final eight minutes to help stave off the Patriots.

Pearson also added a game high 15 rebounds as the Tigers won the rebounding battle 45-34. They also shot 29 free throws, making 19 for 66 percent while the Patriots were 6-12 from the line. Georgetown shot 49 percent from the field to the Patriots’ 46 percent.

Kashiff Carr paced the Patriots with 28 points. DeShawn Mitchell had 23 and Stephan Pope added 12. Fateen Belfield led the patriots in rebounding with seven.

The Patriots are at Shawnee State at 4:00 Saturday for another Mid-South Conference game.
