Patriots defend against Bears in win at Shawnee State

After leading by as many as 11 points in the first half, and 42-36 at halftime, the Patriots found themselves in a typically tough Mid-South Conference game Saturday at Shawnee State. But St. Catharine went on a late 8-0 run to break a 64-64 tie en route to a 77-69 win.

Terrrance Withers started the run with an offensive rebound and putback. Stephan Pope then added two free throws and Kashiff Carr scored after another offensive rebound. Carr the completed the run with a jumper after Adam Decker claimed a big rebound.

Head coach J.T. Burton was especially pleased with his team’s defense after what he considered a subpar performance against Georgetown on Thursday. “We were getting in the passing lanes and we held them to 37 percent shooting which is the best we have done in a long time. This was a big win because Shawnee had already won at Pikeville and also against Campbellsville.”

Carr led all scorers with 25 points and he also had 10 rebounds. Pope added 17 points for the Patriots who shot 48 percent from the field. Withers also had 10 rebounds as St. Catharine won the rebounding battle 47-35.

Shawnee State (6-3, 2-2) was led by Tyler Boyles and mark Bryant with 16 points apiece.

The Patriots (6-4, 2-1) are at home Thursday for a game against IU-Southeast who beat the Patriots 88-72 last week. The game time is noon as St. Catharine welcomes elementary and middle school students from around the region as guests.

This weekend St. Catharine travels to Bellarmine University for the Fern Valley Hotel Classic. On Friday they play Southern Indiana University at 5:00. On Saturday at 7:30 they take on the Bellarmine, the defending NCAA D-II champions.
