Grenadiers explode late to beat Patriots

In front of standing room only crowd, comprised mostly of elementary and middle school student for the noon start, it appeared that the St. Catharine College Patriots had things under control Thursday against the visiting IU-Southeast Grenadiers. But the visitors overcame a six point deficit in the final seven minutes to post an 89-84 victory.

With 5:56 to play, DeShawn Mitchell’s basket gave the Patriots (6-5) a 73-67 lead. But IU-Southeast went on an 11-2 run to take the lead for good with 4:08 remaining. Seven of those 11 points came from Antoine Watson, who transferred to the Grenadiers after playing for the Patriots last season.

And while Watson scored 29 points on 10-15 from the field, he was only the third leading scorer in the game. His teammate Joe Lawson had 30 points and 12 rebounds and was 9-10 from the field. Patriot forward Kashiff Carr led all scorers with 40 points, the most for any St. Catharine player since the patriots joined the NAIA in 2008.

IU-Southeast (8-5) shot 67 percent in the second half and 52 percent for the game. The Patriots shot 42 percent from the field. St. Catharine was 23-29 from the foul line while the Grenadiers made 19 of 24 charity tosses.

IU-Southeast held a 36-35 rebounding advantage. Carr led the Patriots with 11 rebounds. Delonte Taylor and Mitchell joined Carr in double figures with 18 and 16 points respectively.

The Patriots now embark on a weekend schedule of exhibition games at Bellarmine University. Friday at 5:00 they play University of Southern Indiana and Saturday at 7:30 they play the host Knights, last year’s NCAA D-II National Champions.
