Patriot women are among national leaders in many stats

Of course every coach will tell you that the only statistic that matters is the one that appears in the W column. But in order to record those wins a team must perform well in many of the statistical categories. And Lena Bramblett’s St. Catharine Patriots are all over the stats page when one looks at NAIA leaders.

The Patriots, who have compiled a 13-3 record, are ranked in the top 20 nationally in 13 categories. At the top of the list is the number of total blocks (81) in which St. Catharine leads the nation. They are also first nationally in total offensive rebounds (705). They are second in both points scored (1253) and total assists (257). That equates to 78.3 points a game (11th nationally and 16 assists a game (14th).

St. Catharine is fifth in total steals with 172 and 12th in turnover margin at 5.62. The Patriots are 15th in field goal defense, holding opponents to 35 percent shooting, and 16th in free throw percentage as they are shooting 72.5 percent from the line. In addition, St. Catharine is in the top 45 in eight more categories.

Individual performances, obviously, lead to these lofty national rankings. Junior forward Janae Howard leads the nation in point scored, is third in total blocks and fifth in total rebounds. Sophomore guard Machera Calhoun is seventh in assists and Rianne Hofstraat is fourth in total blocks.

St. Catharine has 14 games remaining, all in the Mid-South Conference. All three of the losses for the Patriots this season are in conference play. They will return to action on January 5th with a game at UVA-Wise followed two days later with a game at Pikeville. The next home game is January 19th against the University of the Cumberlands.
