Patriot women bounce Bears 68-64

The St. Catharine women trailed 32-30 at halftime but came back to win 68-64 Thursday at West Virginia Tech. What used to be a Mid-South Conference game is no longer in that the Bears are in the process of moving from the NAIA to another affiliation.

The Patriots, 18-6 overall, overcame a poor shooting night when they hit just 30 percent (21-70) from the field including 3-15 from 3-point range, but they prospered at the foul line where they made 23-34 while the Bears (6-17) were just 9-14 from the charity stripe.

Junior forward Kasei Evans led the Patriots with 27 points while grabbing nine rebounds. She was 9-14 from the field. Janae Howard had 14 points and 12 rebounds. Rianne Hofstraat had 10 points and seven rebounds and Courtney Milam added 10 points and eight boards.

The Bears shot 38 percent from the field but were outrebounded by the Patriots by a whopping 56-36 margin. Amy Gardner led the Bears with 26 points.

St. Catharine remains on the road for Saturday’s Mid-South Conference game at Rio Grande in Ohio. In the previous meeting Rio Grande topped the Patriots 82-81 in overtime.
